According to police, a car crashed into a fuel truck on
Saturday in the Port Harcourt, a
main city in the south of Nigeria,
killing over 30 people and engulfing a number of cars and shops.
Port Harcourt is
an oil rich town.
Apparently the police was chasing the driver when the latter
lost control of the vehicle, according to CNN.
The police spokesman said that they didn’t believe that
terrorists were involved.
For hours the firefighters struggled to put out the fire.
The accident came a day later after the fuel ship explosion.
According to Nigerian authorities, the two accidents were
not related.
The responsibility for that explosion was claimed by a rebel
group, Voice of America reports.
The rebel Movement for the Emancipation of
the Niger Delta was involved in many attacks on the property of the oil company
in last year. It has also carried out many kidnappings among foreign oil
workers. They’ve sworn that they will carry attacks against pipelines, platforms,
and workers.
It was believed that most of the victims were street vendors
and workers from the site of the tanker. Some 15 vehicles were damaged,
according to police, but nobody was wounded.
Port Harcourt is
known to be center of Nigeria
regarding the oil industry, a multi-billion-dollar business. It is a regular
target of militants that are requesting a part of the wealth of the country.
Over 200 foreign workers were kidnapped last year by
insurgents in the country.
Nigeria
is the eighth country in the world that exports crude oil.
