France Telecom and Apple has finally reached and agreement. In
September, Orange, the wireless unit of France Telecom,
confirmed it will sell iPhone in France, but no launch date was
given.
Last week the French newspapers reported that France Telecom is not so happy
with Apple’s business model. It was widely rumored that Apple has signed with
the European telecom giants a contract for iPhone’s distribution, according to
which the carriers must share their iPhone-generated revenues with the Cupertino computer
manufacturer. The deal allegedly stipulates that carriers will provide Apple
with 10% of the revenues made from calls and data transfers by customers over
iPhones.
The French media reported that France Telecom is still negotiating
with Apple, but today Orange
was officially confirmed as the exclusive French carrier partner.
“We are excited to partner with Orange
and bring iPhone to France
in time for the holidays,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPhone is an amazing
product and we hope mobile users in France will love it as much as we
do.”
The iPhone will go on sale in France
on November 29, which is twenty days later then in Germany
and UK.
Orange didn’t reveal any
details about its service and data plans, a strategy similar to the one adopted
by T-Mobile in Germany.
In fact the iPhone will be sold in France for the same price as in Germany, 399
euros including VAT.
In UK
where the iPhone will be sold by Telefonica’s O2 the 8GB version will be
purchased for 269 pounds (387 euros) including VAT.
Also O2 said the iPhone owners will have to sign an 18-month
contract with O2, paying 35, 45 or 55 pounds a month, but they will have
unlimited mobile data usage and unlimited use of 7,500 public Wi-Fi wireless
Internet connections.
