The annual Oscar ceremony represents a grand scene where anything can happen. From big winners blubbering hysterically to outrageous biased flare-ups, uncanny brush-offs and remarks, the Academy Awards always provide unexpected incidents. Thus, one should be prepared for Sunday’s show, which will surely come up with some fresh excitement of its own.
In spite of the fact that organizers of the most important night in Hollywood strive to conceive extravaganza, unrefined sentiments and unscripted moments that blow in emotion outbursts threaten the designed order of the show. Actually, since the event has drawn every year a worldwide television audience in the billions, the enticement to make the most of the night and use it as a political battle scene has proved to be mouth-watering throughout time.
In 2003, filmmaker Michael Moore walked in the footsteps of his predecessors and tried to turn the podium into a pulpit as he started a venomous verbal attack on President George W. Bush for conducting the Iraq war. Although boos quickly filled the auditorium, one shouldn’t have been surprised.
Back in 1973, a woman going by the name of Sacheen Littlefeather hopped on stage to collect Marlon Brando’s best actor prize for his role in “The Godfather.” However, she did not embrace the award and benefited from the occasion to protest the film industry’s treatment of Native Americans.
Several years later, Vanessa Redgrave was also booed by the Oscar aficionados because she thanked the Academy for the honor despite “the threats of a small bunch of Zionist hoodlums.”
Therefore, a new scene should come as no surprise. Even so, we all love scandals, don’t we? Although we may not always admit it.
