Opri Strikes Back at Birkhead

Los Angeles attorney Debra Opri filed a lawsuit against her former client Larry Birkhead Monday, accusing him of making deliberate defamatory remarks and attempting to damage her reputation.

Both lawyer and former client seem dissatisfied with their previous collaboration as well as with the present situation. And a new tell-all book from former MSNBC journalist Rita Cosby appears to have poured plenty of oil over an already burning fire.

Debra Opri filed a lawsuit Monday in which she accuses former client Larry Birkhead of damaging her reputation through defamatory allegations. Birkhead has claimed that Opri was a source for Cosby’s book, “Blonde Ambition: The Untold Story Behind Anna Nicole Smith's Death,” Opri says.

The controversial tell-all presents theories that have upset both Birkhead and Howard K. Stern, determining them to threat with lawsuits all around. Cosby speculates in her book that Stern and Birkhead actually collaborated to profit from Anna Nicole’s death, with the former becoming executor of the model’s estate and the latter obtaining custody of her 1-year-old daughter, Dannielynn.

She also says the two men had a “relationship.”

Opri strongly denies having ever provided Cosby with information for her book and says in a statement issued to E! Online that Birkhead has initiated a “malicious and relentless media campaign to discredit me and to destroy my reputation.”

Opri contends his defamatory remarks were “planned and malicious” and seeks damages that include some $200,000 she says she spent to hire a crisis management firm to “salvage” her reputation.

Opri is also asking for unpaid legal fees Birkhead owes her after she represented him in the paternity case following Anna Nicole’s death. Court-ordered DNA tests showed that Birkhead, at one time Anna Nicole’s boyfriend, is Dannielynn’s father. He subsequently received custody of the child.

“My primary concern has always been for a child named Dannielynn. It is my belief and my strong conviction that no child should be exploited in any manner,” Opri said in her statement to E! Online, specifying that all proceeds from the suit will go to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The legal squirm between Opri and Birkhead has been going on for quite a while now. After he received custody of Dannielynn, Opri petitioned a judge to order Birkhead into arbitration to settle his yet unpaid legal bill.

Birkhead responded with a lawsuit of his own against Opri, accusing her of fraud and legal malpractice. He contends that his former lawyer kept more than her share from a $1 million paycheck he received for several media appearances he made after Anna Nicole’s death (and perhaps for those exclusive photographs of baby Dannielynn?)

While Opri maintains she did not inform Cosby whatsoever, she does suggest that, would she be willing to share, compromising information would surface about Birkhead.

“It is clear now that Mr. Birkhead's attempts to discredit me concerned what I knew and what might be exposed publicly…and not a legal bill,” Opri said.

“My message today to Larry Birkhead is…I have had enough,” she concluded.
