The man whose shoulder Oprah filled with tears of joy at Barack Obama's victory celebration in Chicago's Grant Park, was finally introduced during Friday's "Oprah Winfrey Show."
Two days after a teary-eyed Oprah was caught on tape as she was leaning on a man, whom she only referred to as "Mr. Man," during Obama's Election Night rally, the talk show host and the one dubbed by some as "Oprah's human hanky" reunited during Friday's broadcast.
"Sam Perry! Mr. Man, please stand up!" Oprah Winfrey called from the stage as Perry bounded forward and the two hugged like old friends. "So I apologize for not asking your name," continued Winfrey, who failed to properly introduce herself to Perry, a Silicon Valley businessman and Obama campaign worker.
"Not at all," said Perry, whose shoulder became famous after Oprah soaked his coat in tears. "We were there in the moment."
Although everyone assumed he was a friend, Oprah admitted on her show the following day that he was in fact a stranger, and she didn't even find out his name. On Friday, she said she didn't even saw his full face and it would have been impossible to identify him from a lineup.
Recalling the emotional moments that will probably bound the two forever, Perry, who wore the same coat he was wearing on the rally night, told Oprah she shouldn't worry because her mascara didn't stain his clothes.
"It's a typical 15 minutes of fame," said Perry, who is president of start-up consultancy Ascendance Ventures. "But the key thing that I'm fascinated with is how these images going around the world kind of resonate with people."
Noticing he was standing near one of the world's most recognizable women, Perry said it's "very good" that the cameras were there because it was "a lot easier to go home to my wife and say, 'It really was Oprah.'"
