David Letterman made a historical appearance on the 22nd season premiere of The Oprah Winfrey Show this Monday, jokingly complaining that Oprah never invited him before.
David Letterman, ironic host of “The Late Show” and reluctant interviewee, made a grand exception this Monday by appearing on Oprah Winfrey’s hugely popular show, this week on location at the WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden. There has been much talk about a supposed feud between the two famous entertainers and they seem eager to put such rumors to rest.
Letterman was funny and ironic and complained to Oprah that he waited in vain to be invited on her show. As proof, he brought along his “Oprah Log,” a notebook chronicling the complete lack of invitations on her show.
“I wanted to be asked, Oprah,” Letterman said. “Don't you understand that? … It was humiliating.”
“Why didn't you just pick up the phone?” Winfrey replied.
She in turn reminisced about the time when she was “graciously” invited on Letterman’s show, back in 2005, and showed him a framed photograph she keeps in her office, of him walking her down the street to the opening of the Broadway musical she produced, “The Color Purple.”
Winfrey called that moment “one of the highlights of my career.” That particular episode of “The Late Show” attracted some 13.5 million curious viewers, the program's highest rating since 1994.
Letterman’s presence on Oprah’s show yesterday was probably another highlight for her, as the funnyman is famously reluctant to appear on other people’s talk shows. The last interview he granted was in 2002, when he appeared on Ted Koppel’s “Nightline Up Close,” the spin-off of his “Nightline.”
Oprah asked her signature heart-to-heart questions, such as inquiring how fatherhood had changed him. Letterman spoke warmly about his son Harry, 4, saying that being a parent is “ideal for me.”
He added that parenting is nevertheless sometimes difficult: “It is the constant razor's edge – do you make your point with patience or discipline?” The 60-year-old comedian also revealed that his irony is with him everywhere: “Mommy has to tell him [Harry] a lot that I'm just teasing.”
When his eyeglasses fogged up at one point, he told his host: “I think that also may be you, Oprah.”
Letterman did not shy away from sharing his feelings for Oprah, pulling out one of his signature Top 10 lists, titled Top 10 Reasons I Love Oprah.
