The queen of television expanded her reign over yet another medium, a YouTube channel, Oprah's Channel.
Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions partnered up with the popular video-sharing website in launching a new channel which will offer mostly previews and exclusive behind-the-scenes videos from "The Oprah Winfrey Show," and footage made by Oprah herself. It will also feature interviews with people who became famous through YouTube as well as videos sent by viewers of Oprah’s show, which she’s been hosting for 22 years.
In Oprah’s message to YouTube, the 53-year-old says she is "excited" to have her own channel. The move marks Oprah’s first internet-only addition to her kingdom which currently includes her syndicated talk show, a Sirius Satellite Radio channel, O magazine and a dozen production projects.
However, the channel isn’t meant to replace her existing website which so far contains her radio and TV shows, as well as her monthly magazine archives.
"We are excited to be working with YouTube to provide another platform for people online to communicate with us and share in some of the one-of-a-kind experiences that occur behind-the-scenes at ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show,’" said Tim Bennett, president of Harpo Productions.
The partnership will be formally announced on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" Nov. 6, when YouTube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen will be special guests, along with YouTube all-stars such as P. Diddy's new assistant, the "evolution of dance" guy and Tyson, the skateboarding dog.
"We are delighted that Oprah's channel will open up the dialogue with a new audience," said Jordan Hoffner, head of business development at YouTube, which has been seeking to expand its audience to new segments of the online viewing population.
