Oprah Winfrey, media mogul, is about to launch her own television
network. On Tuesday Winfrey and Discovery Communications announced
that they will launch together a television network that will carry Winfrey’s
name and will be available on satellite to 70 million homes.
The Oprah Winfrey Network, OWN, will début in 2009 on the current
Discovery Health Channel.
Ownership will be split in half between Discovery, of Silver Spring, Md., and
Harpo Inc., Winfrey’s production company, of Chicago, the New York Times reports.
According to companies, Winfrey will be chairwoman of the
network, have full editorial control and will the will be responsible for the “programming,
branding and creative vision.”
The network will focus on health, relationships and money.
Winfrey said: “This is an evolution of what I've been able
to do every day. I will now have the opportunity to do this 24 hours a day on a
platform that goes on forever," BBC News said.
At first the network won’t run “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” but
Winfrey said that she can end the show in 2010 or 2011 so she can move it to
the OWN.
At a conference call held on Tuesday she said: “Eventually
that will happen, we hope.”
Besides having her own network, Winfrey will have another reality
show “Oprah’s Big Give,” due to air on ABC in March.
Winfrey will offer half of her ownership of the Oprah.com website to Discovery.
This is not the first time Winfrey tried to enter television
programming. In 1998 she invested in the Oxygen cable channel, but she withdrew
from any commitments with the company.
According to David Zaslav, president and chief executive of
Discovery Communications, he and Winfrey will start to search for a chief
executive for the OWN..
Winfrey already owns a television production company, a
magazine, radio show and a website among other ventures.
