Opera Software today introduced the final version of its Opera
Mini 4.2 browser for mobile phones, which is now also officially available for G1’s
platform as the first Web browser alternative for Android. The mobile browser
comes with a 30 percent increase in speed for U.S. users, thanks to a new Opera
Mini server park, the company announced.
“With Opera Mini 4.2,
we are showing the world that Opera never gets complacent,” said Jon von Tetzchner,
Opera Software CEO. “Our support for the Android platform helps fulfill our
mission to be available on more platforms, for more devices and reach more
users, anywhere in the world.”
The browser comes in 90 language versions, including Amharic,
Armenian, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Kirghiz, Lingala, Marathi,
Malayalam, Mongolian, Oriya, Punjabi, Pashto, Sinhala, Tajik, Tamil, Telugu,
Urdu, Uzbek, Khmer, Kashmiri, Lao and Turkmen.
In addition to that, it offers personalization options, as
well as support for notes and improved real time streaming protocol (RTSP)
handoff. Furthermore, Opera Mini praises its most valuable asset - the improved
speed – which is possible by compressing the data before it is sent to the
phone. The company explained that this helps keep end-user costs low by keeping
the data delivered to a minimum.
Opera Software also had an announcement for Sprint Instint
users, who can now upgrade their firmware and download the Opera Mini browser.
The company reported increasing popularity of its Opera
Mini, with 21 million unique users browsing five billion pages in October 2008
alone, accounting for a 490 percent increase compared to the same period last
year.
