A man was detained by French police on Friday in connection
with the parcel bomb attack which occurred on Thursday in Paris in which a person was killed and
another one was wounded.
The accident occurred in a law office in a building on
Boulevard des Malesherbes, near the Champs-Elysee, when a parcel, a wooden box,
came at the law office and an office secretary opened it. Then two homemade
explosives went off, killing 60-year-old secretary Jacqueline Belbouai and injuring
lawyer Olivier Brane, 58. He was hospitalized and was out of danger.
The suspect was detained at his mother’s home, USA Today
reports.
He is a 45-year-old architect who supposedly harassed a
lawyer from the firm, Catherine Gouet-Jenselme, 60, two years ago. Although
Gouet-Jenselme filled for a complaint, the case never reached court, AFP
informs.
According to prosecutor Jean-Claude Marin, the parcel was addressed
to the law firm, and it appears to have been an act of personal vengeance
rather than a terrorist one.
Police is also looking for the woman who delivered the
package to the law firm. She was described as small with a motor-cycle helmet.
She immediately left the scene after dropping the parcel.
The law office is located in a building in Paris's fashionable eighth arrondissement
which it houses another law office that was co-founded by President Nicolas
Sarkozy and a Holocaust research foundation.
Investigators said that they didn’t appear to be the target.
Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie visited the law firm
on Thursday and said that police were sure that there wasn’t any mistake
regarding the recipient of the parcel.
She said: "There is no favored theory... It is too
early to be able to come to any conclusions. But the other activities in the
building were clearly identified, so it seems clear that it was someone in the
law firm who was the target,"
Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe, also visited the scene and
said: “We must be very firm and very determined in our condemnation of this crime."
