In an announcement that could mean the revival of Sony’s PS3
Enterbrain, the research company that is tracking the sales of gaming consoles
in Japan
said today that Wii was again outsold by the Blu-Ray gaming machine.
In the last four weeks Sony sold 183,217 PS3s in Japan
compared to 159,193 Wii consoles, Enterbrain revealed.
In a desperate attempt to increase sales, PS3 decreased the
price of PS3 worldwide and launched a new version for only $400.
According to VGChartz.com, a gaming site that tracks the
sales of the gaming console, Nintendo Wii has sold 3,87 million units in Japan since
its launch in November last year.
In the same period, Sony sold only 1,45 million PS3s.
Sousuke Kamei, spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment,
the company's game unit, declined comment on the Enterbrain data as they
weren't the company's own or Nintendo's numbers. But he said sales of the
40-gigabyte machines were brisk in Japan.
"Sales are gaining momentum as we head to the year-end,
and the availability of more game software for the PS3 is also helping boost
sales," he said.
Two days ago, SCEA announced in a press statement that PS3
is gaining momentum in the US.
Sony disclosed that PlayStation 3 sales increased by 245%
when compared to Black Friday sales last year and since November 2 (the launch
date of both the 40GB and the cheaper 80GB PS3 models) PS3 hardware sales have
increased by 298%.
The popularity of the 40 GB version of PS3 is great news for
Sony, because it could also mean an increase in the sales of the gaming
software.
Unlike the 80GB PS3, the 40 GB version isn’t backward
compatible with the PS2 titles, which means that the customers who bought a 40
GB PS3 will have to buy new games.
It may be too early for Sony to celebrate its November
triumph.
This Saturday Nintendo is scheduled to launch the Wii Fit,
which will go on with a device called Wii Balance Board.
Shaped like a household body scale with a white top and grey
bottom, Wii Balance Board connects wireless to Nintendo’s Wii and it contains
pressures sensors used to control the virtual movements. Also, the sensors are
used to measure the user's center of mass and body mass index. Wii Fit will
cost around 8,800 yens and it will surely increase Wii sales in the next
period.
