Olympus to Release Stylus 1050 SW – Shock and Waterproof, Tap Controlled

Japanese optics and imaging-specialized Olympus Corp. announced today that it plans to release Stylus 1040 and 1050 SW - the new entries in the company’s digital camera series.

The 1050 SW camera is shock and waterproof and has features such as a 10-megapixel sensor, 2.7-inch LCD and 3x optical zoom. Among the numerous shooting options, the 1050 SW also has a 16-person face detection system.

The Stylus 1050 SW can resist drops of up to 5 feet, submersions of down to 10 feet and can withstand temperatures as low as 14-degrees Fahrenheit (-10 degrees Celsius).

The new release from Olympus seems to solve problems related to unfriendly environment such as trying to take pictures under water or with your gloves on when skiing.

Both the Stylus 1040 and 1050 will hit the market in October. The 1040 will cost $199 and the 1050 $299. The Stylus 1040 is “the thinnest Stylus camera of all times” and also features face and smile detection and club mode. It can recognize up to 16 faces at a time.

The 1050 has a more rugged design and Tap Control, a feature which uses a 3D accelerometer as an input method. The Tap Control lets the user tap the top, back and sides of the camera to start its features. The feature sounds similar to motion-detecting video game control systems.
