A podiatrist from Olympia Fields was found guilty Monday of
sexually assaulting an elderly woman who suffered from a sprained ankle in 2006.
Circuit Judge Michael Toomin convicted Anthony Overton, 63,
of Olympia Fields, in Cook County Criminal Court on two counts of aggravated
criminal sexual assault. Overton faces a minimum sentence of 12 years in
prison.
According to the woman’s testimony, she went to Overton’s office in the 9600
block of South Halset Street
in June 2006 because of pain in her right foot. After an X-ray, she was diagnosed
with a sprained ankle, but during the examination, Overton rubbed her breasts
and inserted his finger in her vagina and rectum, she said, according to the
Chicago Tribune. Overton allegedly told the victim he had done her "a
favor" by detecting an infection and not charging her extra.
On the other hand, the defense lawyers said a full physical
exam was something necessary for foot patients. According to Overton’s
testimony, he often conducted such exams to check for other ailments that may
be indirectly producing foot problems, such as blood clots or internal
bleeding.
However, prosecutors said Overton went beyond the scope of a
typical podiatry exam. Moreover, the woman, now 77, had not given him consent
to conduct the gynecological examination.
The patient "went in for treatment of pain in her lower
right foot. She did not envision or contemplate a gynecological examination,” Toomin
said.
Additionally, three other women testified that Overton
subjected them to inappropriate exams.
After the verdict, Overton, who will be sentenced May 23,
declined to comment.
