Oklahoma E.Coli Outbreak Investigation Continues. Further Tests Needed

The season of the food-related outbreaks is far from being over. Oklahoma health officials said the type of Esterichia coli (E.coli) bacteria that has been held responsible for the new outbreak in Oklahoma, the death of one man and the hospitalization of at least 41 others is "not normally found in this form of outbreak." Leslea Bennett-Webb, director of communication for the Oklahoma State Department of Health said the joint investigation of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, helped state officials determine the subtype of bacteria, but investigators weren’t able to confirm the source of the of the outbreak.

Investigators carried out tests on water taken from the Country Cottage Restaurant located in Locust Grove. The tests indicated the presence of the E.coli bacteria but U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are still testing Oklahoma samples to determine what type of E. coli this pathogen is. The process should take two or three days.

One person died a week after eating at the Country Cottage restaurant in Locust Grove and dozens became sick and reported symptoms of food poisoning along with a very severe and bloody form of diarrhea. Most of them ate at the restaurant in Locust Grove between August 15 and 17.

No problems have been found with Locust Grove’s public drinking water supply.

The restaurant will remain closed until further notice.

Outbreaks have been associated with undercooked ground beef (used for hamburgers), vegetables grown in cow manure or washed in contaminated water. That’s why epidemiologists think that food is more likely to blame for the E.coli outbreak than water.
