Ohio: Small Plane Crashes, Six Dead

Sunday, a small plane crashed in northern Ohio, killing six people.

According to CNN, authorities said that the plane was piloted by an ex state lawmaker and it crashed west of Fremont, Ohio.

Gene Damschroder, 86, had also been a pilot in World War II. He served in the state House from 1973 to 1983.

Sgt. Matt Crow of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said that the single-engine Cessna crashed around 1 p.m., just after it took off from the Fremont Airport. Damschroder was the owner of the single-runway airport.

Authorities have not discovered the cause of the accident.

The other five victims were Bill Ansted, 62, and Allison Ansted, 23, of Lindsay, Ohio; Danielle Gerwin, 31, Emily Gerwin, 4, of Gibsonburg, Ohio and Matt Clearman, 25, of Maumee, Ohio, reported CNN.

Rex, Damschroder’s son, also a professional pilot, said that his father had a lot of experience in piloting planes as he had been a flight instructor and a professional charter pilot. He was very sure of his father’s skills.

He also added that the passengers were supposed to take a tour of the city, as part of a Lions Club pancake fundraiser.

Fremont is a city of 25,000 about 45 miles southeast of Toledo, Ohio.

The scene of the crash is being investigated in order to establish the cause of the accident.
