Ohio Mother Charged with Child-endangering after Breast-Feeding while Driving

According to police, an Ohio mother was charged with child endangering after another driver reported she was breast-feeding and talking on the phone while driving.

Police say authorities used a license plate number to track down the woman to her home.
The witness said he saw the woman breastfeeding and talking on the phone while driving a Honda minivan into the parking lot of a school. He also reported that he saw some children get out of the van. When she was caught, the 39-year-old woman allegedly said it was a common practice for her to feed her 2-years-old child while driving. She said she would not let her child go hungry.

According to officer Michael Burke, the problem was that the woman carried a baby in her lap, not that she was breastfeeding in public. He added that Compton would have been charged even if the child was just sitting on her lap. “Our issue is that she created the condition that placed her child's health and safety at risk,” Burke was quoted as saying.

Genine Compton, 39, of Elm Grove in Harrison Twp., was charged with a first-degree misdemeanor of child endangering and minor misdemeanor for unlawfully restraining her child. If convicted of these charges, she could face up to 180 days in jail and fined between $1,500 and $1,800.
