The California woman, who became famous after giving birth to eight babies in late January, is facing criticism not only from medical experts, ethicists and pro-life activists, but from her own mother who called her decision to impregnate herself again after giving birth to six previous children “really unconscionable.”
In a new interview with Splash News that aired on “Good Morning America” on Monday, Angela Suleman had harsh words for her 33-year-old daughter Nadya, who is a single mother of fourteen, without a job and with “no means to support” her children.
“She (Nadya) really, really has no idea what she’s doing to her children,” Suleman said.
An unemployed graduate student, Nadya Suleman, still lives with her parents and already had six children under the age of 7 before giving birth to octuplets on January 26.
According to the elder Suleman, a retired Bellflower, CA, teacher, her daughter “spent a lot of money on toys,” but she never contributed rent or food money. Nadya, who suffered a back injury at her work place before giving birth to her first child in 2001, also failed to tell her mother about more than $167,000 that records show she received from worker's compensation claims.
“I did hear that she received money from her insurance,” Suleman said. “She never told me. But I've never seen any money, not for house payments or for feeding the kids.”
When asked how she thought her daughter would cope with so many responsabilities, Angela Suleman said, “I really don’t know. I’m really tired of taking care of those six. I need her to really think of what she’s gonna do. How’s she going to provide for all of these children?”
Moreover, Nadya hasn’t worked since she started having babies, while her parents struggled to pay the bills and help her raise the children. Angela Suleman lost a house because of her daughter and was forced to file for bankruptcy in March 2008, according to court documents.
“Unless [Nadya] starts working, earning money, I don't know, she may have to go on welfare, which she said she never would do,” her mother said.
During her first interview since giving birth, Nadya said it was her life’s dream to have a huge family to compensate for a lonely childhood. However, according to her mom, it was her choice to be a single parent since Nadya's boyfriend and the biological father of her 14 children wanted to marry her, but she insisted on having children on her own.
