It is high time the battle against breast cancer got more serious and it appears that organizations and donors took the bull by the horns starting this October, during the National Breast Cancer Awareness month.

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), breast cancer is the second cause of cancer-related death, lagging only behind lung cancer. It is indeed a type of cancer that has increased survival probability; however around 40,480 women will die from the disease this year according to the ACS.

There are thousands of awareness initiatives going on this October. It’s fair to begin with Mary Stratton’s case. She has been diagnosed with breast cancer four times. She is going on with her life right now, but what she had to go through is amazing. Mary says she started her support group with six women, and over 10 years, it grew to more than 300 women. Another amazing deed was made by The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal which published on pink newsprint to mark the start of the cancer awareness month.

Dr. Che Miller, a surgeon who specializes in breast cancer gave some useful explanations and potential solutions for decreasing the risks. “You can substantially lower your chance of breast cancer by breastfeeding your children and if you have your children before 30,” he said, explaining that breast cancer is usually found in juvenile breasts. Breastfeeding ages the breast tissue, and thus reducing the risk of developing cancer.

AstraZeneca, which manufactures breast cancer drugs, founded the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the year 1985. In 1993 Evelyn Lauder, Senior Corporate Vice President of the Estée Lauder Companies founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and established the Pink Ribbon as its symbol.
