Obama in Hawaii to Check on His Ailing Granny

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama talked to the press about his trip to Hawaii to visit his ailing grandmother. The Illinois Senator has suspended some events in his presidential campaign program in order to go home to Hawaii and see about his grandmother. Obama fears that his granny, who is a very important person in his life, might not make it to Election Day.

In an interview with Robin Roberts of "Good Morning America," Obama said that he plans to go to Hawaii and give his 85-year-old grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, a kiss and a big hug.

"And then we're going to find out what chores I can do, because I'm sure there's been some stuff that's been left undone," said Obama. Dunham was the person who largely contributed to Obama’s uprising and is more like a mother to him.

The Senator surprisingly quit the campaign with less than two weeks to go and rushed to see his ailing granny. Obama will resume his campaign activity on Saturday.

Obama’s grandmother, or “Toot,” has been experiencing some health problems lately and recently broke her hip. Her condition was described as “gravely ill” by Obama, who calls her Toot, short for the Hawaiian word “tutu,” meaning grandparent. His grandmother will turn 86 on Sunday.

"She had some other problems that were getting worse. You know, we weren't sure, and I'm still not sure, whether she makes it to Election Day,” said Obama.

Obama told his advisers that the trip to Hawaii was not negotiable despite the fact that they had to cancel several presidential campaign events. The senator missed his mother’s death in Hawaii in 1995 and doesn’t plan to repeat the mistake.

The 47-year-old senator reportedly touched down at 7:25 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time and his motorcade took him directly to the apartment building on South Beretania Street where his grandmother lives.
