Obama Will Hold Rally to Draw Support for Stimulus

President Barack Obama will most likely call on Congress to hurry up and pass his economic stimulus plan when he holds two speeches, one at a meeting in recession-hit Elkhart, Indiana and one during a White House news conference.

The stimulus plan passed the House of Representatives and will most likely pass the Senate on Tuesday, but the problem is that the versions of the bill are a bit different. The Senate version is of $827 billion and the House of Representatives is of $820 billion in spending and tax cuts, so the two Congress houses must negotiate and agree on a single final version of the economic stimulus plan.

"We've got to work through the differences, find the best bill we possibly can, and get it in place as quickly as possible," Lawrence Summers, a top Obama economic adviser, told Fox News Sunday.

The speeches President Obama plans to hold have the purpose of regaining momentum lost after some of his cabinet nominees failed to pay their taxes. The embarrassing mistakes surfaces just as President Obama was criticizing the Wall Street executives for spending as much as $20 billion to pay themselves bonuses and “golden parachutes” using money received from the government (the taxpayer’s money) in the first part of the stimulus plan approved under the Bush administration.

The first speech will be held in Indiana’s Elkhart region, where the unemployment rate has climbed to 15.4 percent from 4.7 in the last year. The speech is a chance for Obama to hold a campaign-style event and make his case for a stimulus package to save the economy.

The speech President Obama plans to hold in the East Room the White House will be an opportunity to make his case before the entire nation and clarify some issues after last week he acknowledged that he “screwed up” with an important cabinet nomination.
