These days, talks of efficient energy policies and reforms are once again in the spotlight, and the two major players in discussions are the United States and China. The two states are fighting for two spots in this economy: the largest producer of harmful emissions, and the largest nation to adopt clean energy policies and cut down emissions.
We know the country that harnesses clean renewable energy will lead the 21st century, and yet it is China that has launched the largest effort in history to make their economy energy efficient, Barack Obama said in his recovery plan speech last week.
Obama also added that the United States has fallen behind other countries, such as Germany and Japan, in producing renewable energy, such as solar power. It is time for America to lead again, Obama concluded.
The recovery plan includes doubling the nation’s supply of renewable energy in the next three years. In addition to that, energy research has also received significant funding this year, the largest funding of the kind in American history.
But to truly transform our economy, to protect our security and save our planet from the ravages of climate change, we need to ultimately make clean renewable energy the profitable kind of energy, Obama also said.
According to a federal report on climate change released last week by the National Research Council, integrating research in natural and social sciences would make the difference in tackling climate change, and would help guide the nation in reducing costs and risks of climate change.
