Obama Can Take Pride in His Health

Following John McCain’s release of his medical record, amounting to more than one thousand pages, Barack Obama’s doctor sent a letter containing his insight on the Democratic presidential candidate’s health.

According to David L. Scheiner, who has taken care of Obama’s health since 1987, the presidential candidate is in excellent health and has never had any major problems. Mr Obama was treated by the doctor for minor problems like upper respiratory infections, small injuries or skin rashes.

The only two things that aren’t great about his health are the fact that he is a smoker, but he is trying to quit now, and that there is a history of cancer that runs in his family. As to what his smoking habit is concerned, Mr. Scheiner stated that the senator had tried and managed to quit in the past, but only to start again. However, Mr. Obama is using Nicorette gum in his effort to quit the dangerous habit and it seems that the treatment is successful.

Even though his mother died of ovarian cancer and his maternal grandfather of prostate cancer, oncologists say that the risk of Mr. Obama developing the disease is very little. The Democratic presidential candidate’s PSA, a test used as a potential way of finding prostate cancer, was 0.6, a very low value that shows he is in no danger of having the disease.

Other markers used to determine whether a person is in good health or not have all indicated that Senator Obama is as healthy as is gets. His blood pressure is 90 over 60, his cholesterol values are optimal, and blood tests and EKGs have shown no need of worrying.

Barack Obama was last checked by his doctor about a year ago, in January 2007.
