British rock band Oasis will not perform in China as a result of various economic issues and not because of any link with the Tibet matter media sources have been talking about, an official at the promoter of the concerts announced on Tuesday.
Oasis had explained China canceled shoes scheduled to take place in Shanghai and Beijing after they discovered that band member Noel Gallagher had shown up at a “Free Tibet” benefit gig in the United States in 1997. However, a promoter from Beijing All Culture Communication Co. Ltd., a small company that endorses more ballet and traditional Chinese concert than rock shows, informed Reuters during a telephone call that the China gig had been canceled due to a “tough economic situation.”
China has led Tibet with despotic control since People’s Liberation Army troops entered the Himalayan region in 1950 and condemns any challenge to its power and influence.
“According to the organizer, the performance was canceled because of some economic problems the organizer had,” Qin Gang, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry told a regular news program.
In spite of the fact that the China concert will not take place, the rest of the Southeast Asian leg of the Oasis tour will progress as planned. The rock band is scheduled to hold a concert in Hong Kong on April 7.
Last year, China announced it would constrict power over foreign music acts after Icelandic star Bjork shouted “Tibet! Tibet!” during a Shanghai concert. Musicians are prohibited to carry out content that might affect “national unity” or “stir up resentment” and promoters are demanded to present set-lists and lyric sheets for authorization.
