O. J. Is Free - For Now

The very notorious O. J. Simpson, now facing charges of armed robbery, assault and kidnapping, posted $125,000 bond and was released from a Las Vegas jail Wednesday.

O. J. Simpson, former NFL star and actor and currently a writer (sort of) was acquitted of murdering his former wife and her friend in a 1995 murder trial that will forever overshadow his life.

He has nevertheless gotten himself in another major (il)legal situation: O. J. reportedly took part in an armed robbery of sports memorabilia in Las Vegas and is faced with ten felony charges against him, including conspiracy to commit kidnapping, conspiracy to commit robbery, burglary with a deadly weapon, coercion with a deadly weapon, robbery with a deadly weapon, kidnapping with a deadly weapon and assault with a deadly weapon.

The judge released O. J. only on condition that he surrender his passport and forbade him to have any contact whatsoever with the witnesses, victims or co-defendants in the case.

“No direct or indirect contact,” Clark County Judge Joe Bonaventure was quoted by E! Online as telling Simpson. “If you see them walking down the street, you're to cross the street. You do not use any means to contact these individuals. Don't use email, telephone, mail, passenger pigeon, no whatsoever contact.”

As the former football player is allowed to travel within the continental U.S., he has returned to his home in Miami, Florida. He is to return to court for a status check on Oct. 22.

“We expect Mr. Simpson to be processed and released fairly quickly,” his attorney Yale Galanter said. “He's relieved. This has been a very harrowing experience for him.”

The 60-year-old could spend the rest of his life behind bars as the two counts of first-degree kidnapping using a deadly weapon could bring a sentence of life in prison if he is convicted.

At a news conference after the hearing, Galanter said Simpson will plead not guilty to all the charges at the arraignment scheduled for the week of October 22, reports CNN on its website.

Simpson is accused of having entered a Las Vegas hotel room together with four other men, pointing guns at two men – collectors Alfred Beardsley and Bruce Fromong – and taking with them sports memorabilia, along with Fromong's cell phone and Beardsley's cap and sunglasses.

O. J. has claimed that the items belonged to him and he was simply retrieving his property. He also claimed no guns were involved. According to the police, he actually planned the event and at least two guns were involved, which authorities recovered during searches.

His co-defendants are Walter Alexander, Clarence Stewart, Michael McClinton and Charles Cashmore.

Beardsley and Fromong told police they were asked by a man named Thomas Riccio to meet at the Palace Station Hotel and Casino with a potential buyer for about $100,000 worth of memorabilia, reports Reuters.

Tom Riccio, an auction house owner, tape-recorded the entire incident.

Both Cashmore, 40, and Beardsley, 46, are reportedly in police custody. A U.S. Marshals Service spokesperson, Michael Picou, said Beardsley was suspected of violating his parole in a conviction for stalking, according to Reuters.

In the meantime, O. J.’s creepy book telling how he would have committed the murders more than a decade ago if he had done it – which he didn’t – is still selling.

There have also been reports that Fred Goldman, father of the late Ron Goldman, was interested in obtaining the sports memorabilia himself, as a settlement for the largely unpaid $33.5 million Simpson owes in damages to the victims' families.
