A Las Vegas judge finally set a bail for former football player O.J. Simpson who was arrested on Sunday for burglary, robbery, kidnapping, conspiracy and assault with a deadly weapon.
In addition to the sum which was established by Clark County District Attorney Daniel Rogers and Simpson's attorneys, Yale Galanter and Gabe Grasso, Simpson must also surrender his passport to his attorney within 24 hours and refrain from any contact of any kind with witnesses, victims and codefendants in the case.
"No direct or indirect contact," Clark County Judge Joe Bonaventure was quoted by E!Online as telling Simpson. "If you see them walking down the street, you're to cross the street. You do not use any means to contact these individuals. Don't use email, telephone, mail, passenger pigeon, no whatsoever contact."
He will be allowed to travel within the continental U.S. and was ordered to return to court for a status check on Oct. 22.
"We expect Mr. Simpson to be processed and released fairly quickly," Galanter said. "He's relieved. This has been a very harrowing experience for him."
"He just wants to get home and be with his family," said Galanter, who called the bail "extremely reasonable."
Simpson must obey these rules otherwise he faces even more legal trouble. "Those are very standard bond conditions," Galanter said outside the courthouse, adding that the deal was brokered several days ago and that Simpson's passport had already been turned over to him.
"Despite his past, he is not a danger to the community," Simpson’s lawyer said. "Other than him being Mr. Simpson, there is nothing unusual about this case. What we came to do here this morning has happened."
The 60-year-old star appeared in front of a judge today, wearing a navy prison jumpsuit and cuffed at his arms and feet, confirming that he understood the charges against him. It was Simpson’s first court appearance since he was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife and her friend in 1995. Also attending the hearing were members of Simpson’s family and some journalists. He did not enter a plea.
Following a sports memorabilia robbery in a Las Vegas casino hotel room last week, Simpson was questioned and released the same day but arrested on Sunday. The incident was tape-recorded by Tom Riccio, an auction house owner who set up the meeting with collectors Alfred Beardsley and Bruce Fromong.
According to Fromong, Simpson and four black men, two of them were armed, barged in his hotel room and asked for his stuff back at gunpoint.
Riccio on the other hand, told police officers he knew that Simpson was coming for his things, but he had no idea guns would be involved.
