The former NFL star was questioned by police today over a theft of sports memorabilia from a hotel room at Palace Station Hotel and casino in Las Vegas.
According to media reports, the Las Vegas Police Department has confirmed that Simpson was questioned about a break-in that took place at Las Vegas' Palace Station casino hotel Thursday night but he’s not an official suspect just yet, Los Angeles Times reported.
"The investigation is ongoing, and O.J. Simpson is alleged to be the suspect," Las Vegas Police Sgt. John Loretto said by telephone.
No arrests have been made and Simpson was set free while police believes he’s still in Las Vegas. He had been scheduled to give a deposition in Miami in a bankruptcy case involving his eldest daughter, but postponed it all.
"We don't believe he's going anywhere," police spokesman Jose Montoya said.
"When they talked to him, Simpson made the comment that he believed the memorabilia was his," he added. "We're getting conflicting stories from the two sides."
According to Associated Press, "associates of Simpson" were questioned as well.
"We have some allegations of a theft that took place that does involve Mr. Simpson," Montoya was quoted by E!Online as saying. "Our detectives have interviewed the victim and Mr. Simpson. The investigation is ongoing. We don't have a warrant, so we don't have [Simpson] as a suspect right now."
The theft was reported to police by a memorabilia dealer who claimed he was robbed at gunpoint by Simpson in his hotel room.
The incident comes less than 24 hours after the release of his controversial book "If I Did It" in which he describes the ways he would have murdered his former wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman, who were found dead outside Nicole’s house. Although he was acquitted of criminal murder charges, he was found liable for the two deaths in a civil lawsuit.
The rights over his manuscript were handed to the Goldman’s family. The title of the book was changed to "If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer," and is being published by Beaufort Books.
