The only thing that remained undecided in the case of O.J. Simpson’s trial is for how long the NFL fallen star will stay in prison. On Friday, Mr. Simpson will find out how many years he’ll spend behind bars in a Nevada state prison for his attempt to recover sports memorabilia and personal items from two dealers.
The two defendants left in the trial, Mr. Simpson and co-defendant Clarence C.J. Stewart, did not testify. According to his attorney, Yale Galanter, Mr. Simpson does not have any intention to address the court. The two golfing buddies were convicted Oct. 3 of 12 criminal charges, including kidnapping and armed robbery. They are now facing a minimum of six years and up to life in prison.
"Best-case scenario we're hoping for is six years. That's the bottom-end number before being eligible for parole," said Brent Bryson, Clarence C.J. Stewart’s attorney.
O.J. Simpson, a Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Hall of Fame running back is currently being held at the Clark County Detention Center
Galanter claims that the jury convicted Simpson not for what happened at the Las Vegas hotel, but for the fact that the NFL former star was acquitted in 1995 in the double-murder trial of ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.
"O.J. comes into court with a lot of baggage," Galanter said. "Even though he was acquitted in the mid-'90s, the public perception is that he did it."
Clark County District Court Judge Jackie Glass is know for giving severe sentences and in O.J. Simpson’s case I don’t see why he would make any exception. Glass received a recommendation from the state parole agency calling for at least 18 years.
