If you’ve ever heard of O.J. Simpson (and it’s pretty hard to have missed the phenomenon that was his case), statistics say you either think he’s innocent or you think the jury was wrong. Few people have been known to be neutral regarding the famous football player, actor, spokesman and broadcaster.
O.J. was separated from his wife, Nicole Brown, in 1989, after she filed a domestic violence charge against him. He pled “no contest” and they were separated, while O.J. was sentenced by the judge to pay Nicole child support. In June, 1994, his wife and a friend of hers (Ronald Goldman) were found dead outside Nicole’s residence. O.J. was the first suspects and he was charged with homicide. Unwilling to turn himself in, Simpson was tracked down and followed by the police, until he was caught and arrested. Trivialized as “the trial of the century”, the trial ended in October 1995, when the jury found him “not guilty” regarding the two murders. Not very surprising, considering that his defense attorney was Johnnie Cochran.
Trouble seems to be following Simpson (or is it the other way around?), as he has recently been charged (September 2007) with armed robbery and kidnapping. Apparently, O.J. and five other people burst into a hotel with the intention of retrieving O.J.’s memorabilia and trophies. The trial lasted for a whole month, while the prosecution gave the jury an image of a Machiavellian Simpson. On the other hand, his defense attorney blamed the police and the prosecutors for the charges brought upon his client.
The trial was mostly basic on ordinary, taking into account the evidence and the charges brought against the former NFL star, O.J. Simpson. But his notoriety soon turned the trial into a media frenzy that, like the previous one, swept across the nation. Millions were again glued to their television sets, much like they were in 1995, when the controversial verdict was given. Regarding this case, the jury started their deliberation today and we’re all anxiously waiting for their take.
