Nvidia Corp announced the release of its new processors, Tegra
600 and Tegra 650 which are expected to offer a much better alternative to the market’s
options, powering the devices with a long battery life which will facilitate
full Internet surfing, game-playing and also high-definition video displays.
The chips will be released today at the Computex Show and the price will range
between $200 and $250.
The company hopes for its products to be used on a large variety
of computing devices and especially targets the new formed category of mobile
Internet devices (MIDs).
The Tegra chips are based on the company’s APX2500 processor
with a 193 sq mm architecture and have been referred to by the company as "computers on a chip". They also present an
ARM 11 central processing unit core, system memory, a graphics processing unit
and peripherals.
The release attacks Intel’s Atom chips, which are presented
as being better suited for gaming and Web browsing. Nvidia will probably build
its sales campaign on the far better power consumption of its product. The Tegra
allows a continuous video play back of almost 30 hours, far beyond the Atom
processor’s capacity.
The company’s mobile business general manager, Mike Rayfield
expects the first batch of devices using the Tegra processors to be available
for purchase by the fourth-quarter holiday season. He also expressed his firm belief
that their affordable and very useful product will be welcomed on the market.
"By the end of the week, we'll see people talking about
the fact that they're designing products around this technology," Rayfield
said, according to Reuters.
