Nvidia announced at the Mobile World Congress its plans to launch a new Tegra 600-series based mobile Internet device, which will be available for just $99. Also, the company announced that through a partnership with Google and the Open Handset Alliance, Android support will be provided to the Tegra 600-series family.
“We welcome Nvidia’s support of Android on Tegra and we look forward to many more Android-based devices that deliver an outstanding consumer experience,” said Andy Rubin, Google’s senior director of mobile platforms.
The new platform was developed with ST-Ericsson in order for it to provide 3G communication capability. According to the presentation released by Nvidia’s officials, the Tegra chips will bring advanced graphics capabilities to mobile devices and at the same time will draw less power. The company’s Tegra-based phones were designed to deliver advanced graphics, a better battery life and always-on Internet access. The new MID will provide users with full high-definition 1080p video playback and also full Wi-Fi and 3G mobile broadband connectivity capabilities. Considering the price for the upcoming offer, it should be listed as one of the best available options.
The company described its offer as a "complete software solution including Microsoft Windows Embedded CE OS, application viewers, full Internet browser, UI framework, board support package (BSP), software development kit (SDK), Web mail client, and more."
Each Tegra chip includes an Arm-based processor core, a GeForce graphics core and several other components. The lineup includes the Tegra 600 which runs at 700MHz and the Tegra 650 which runs at 800MHz. There are also available the Tegra APX 2500 and the APX 2600.
