Connecticut police were
conducting a manhunt Friday after a veteran Norwalk police officer was fatally shot while
investigating a “suspicious incident.”
According to Police Chief Harry Rilling, the dead officer
was Matthew Morelli, 38, an 11-year veteran of the department who was honorably
discharged from the Marines after serving as an intelligence analyst, the
Boston Globe reported.
The shooting occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m., when Morelli
stopped to investigate suspicious activity in a secluded parking lot on Lubrano Place in
south Norwalk.
"The uniformed officer was on patrol and had stepped out on Lubrano Place to
investigate suspicious activity to the rear of the parking lot," Lt. Paul
Resnick, the police department representative, said, according to Fox News.
"It's a shock and tragedy anytime you have an officer killed in the
line of duty," Resnick added.
No details about a possible suspect have been released because the
investigation is ongoing.
Police in search for traces blocked several streets near the shooting scene on
Friday morning. In addition, several area departments are assisting and police
helicopters from Westchester County, N.Y., and New
York City were being used.
This is first Norwalk
officer killed in the line of duty since Officer Marco Carias was killed March
20, 1982.
