Nokia’s New Addition To ‘Comes With Music’: Sony BMG’s Catalogue

Sony BMG Music Entertainment joined Nokia’s ‘Comes With Music’ initiative, which is planned to launch in the second half of 2008, the companies unveiled on Tuesday. Another hit for Nokia, after December’s deal with Universal Music Group, in its quest to provide a revolutionary way of enjoying music on Nokia devices.

In a world where music “on the go” is practically “it”, Nokia’s collaboration with two of the four major music labels on the market is one big step ahead, enabling them to “offer a huge range of fantastic music from both international and local artists,” as Tero Ojanperä, executive vice president and head of the Nokia Entertainment and Communities business said.

Having a huge catalogue at its disposal, and with hopes to expand even more if other labels will join in, Nokia’s ‘Comes With Music’ program is one major challenge for Apple, and a step ahead in competing with piracy and low CD sales.

Tero Ojanperä further said: “Nokia ‘Comes With Music’ is an innovation that not only helps people discover and enjoy music, but also expands the overall business and revenue for benefit of artists, labels and other right holders.”

On the other hand, Thomas Hesse, President of Global Digital Business and U.S. Sales, Sony BMG Music Entertainment said: “We think this business model will encourage users to sample a wide range of material, expand their musical tastes, and listen to more music than ever before. In the process, we think it will provide new opportunities to artists from every genre of music, and increase demand for music overall.”

‘Comes With Music’ buyers will have one year access to Sony BMG’s music catalogue, by downloading tracks to their mobile phones or computers through Nokia Music Store, an initiative that was first announced in August 2007. After the one-year period is over, consumers will be able to continue the purchase of additional tracks from the Nokia Music Store or subscribe to Nokia’s “unlimited access” offer.
