Nokia to Launch N79 and N85 High-End Smartphones in October

Nokia Corporation, the world's largest manufacturer of mobile phones, announced Tuesday it will launch its two newest, high-end smartphones – the N79 and the N85.

The new Nokia smartphones are to be released on the market as the Finnish company fights against increasing competition with the most heat coming from Apple Inc and Samsung. The increasing demand for PC-like phones determined the market’s big players to exploit the opportunity and develop mobile phones with larger memories, bigger screens, touch screen and the list could go on.

The N85 handset will be equipped with an 8-gigabyte memory card and will also come with a three-month license for turn-by-turn voice navigation. Meanwhile, the N79 will feature a four-gigabyte microSD memory card and 10 pre-loaded N- Gage games.

Both the N79 and the N85 will feature 5-megapixel cameras, navigation and pre-loaded games. Nokia will launch the two high-end handsets on the market in October. The N85 will be available for 450 euros ($662), while the N79 will be retailed for 350 euros.

The smartphones market has grown 29% to 32.2 million units in the first quarter of 2008, research firm Gartner said according to CNNMoney.com. Nokia got its hands on a 45% share of the pie, while Research in Motion Ltd. (BlackBerry producer) was second with a share of 13.4%. Apple completes the top 3 with a 5.3% share.

In the statement, the Finnish phone maker also mentioned that its users downloaded as much as 90 million applications between 2006 and 2008.

Shares of the Espoo, Finland-based company increased 1.8 percent to 17.63 euros by 0852 GMT.
