Nokia Enters The Touch Screen Market

Nokia, the world’s biggest mobile phone manufacturer, has unveiled their new 5800 XpressMusic which will be a direct competitor to the ever so popular iPhone. Nokia claims that this new device is a media phone first and an Internet device second and that its target is youths whose lives revolve around listening to music. The similarities with the iPhone are in design, the 5800 looks like a bigger iPhone, the touch screen and the fact that it is a media phone. Nokia enters the touch screen market announcing features for its phone that will just blow away the competition.

Firstly, maybe the most important, the price tag for this phone is way below Apple’s, at about $407. A great feature, attacking Apple’s iTunes, is Comes With Music, a service that will give 5800 buyers access to unlimited music downloads for an entire year. The catalog of Comes With Music will include all the four major labels and 4 million songs. This is a very tempting offer Nokia puts on the table and the question is why would anybody buy that music from iTunes when they can get the same music freely along with the MusicXpress. Also because Nokia is so widespread around the world, the 5800 XpressMusic will benefit from a massive promotion campaign. The phone’s menu will be available in 60 different languages, covering almost 90% of the planet’s population.

The 5800 will have a single finger touch screen, its browser will have Flash Lite 3 installed so it can surf the entire net, built in GPS navigation, a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, and Nokia says that its music player will be very easy to use as it will be accessible from anywhere in the phone’s menu. The fact that the Finnish phone company hasn’t released any test models yet, nobody can say if this is definitely better than Apple’s iPhone. Taking in consideration the price tag of this new Nokia and the price of an iPhone one could easily say that they don’t even target the same people. If Nokia indeed created an iPhone killer only time will say.
