No Playstation 3 Price Cut Expected at Games Convention in Leipzig

Among rumors that Microsoft would drop the price of the Xbox 360 in September from $279 to $199 for the Arcade model and $349 to $299 for the Pro model with hard drive, Sony has made clear that, like the previous year, there will be no price cut for the Playstation 3 at the prestigious Games Convention event in Leipzig, Germany. This should put a stop to the rumors that Sony will announce some price cut for PS3 at the upcoming Leipzig’s Game Convention.

Although PlayStation 3 is lagging behind its competitors, namely Nintendo and Microsoft, Sony seems to be determined to keep the price of the gaming console as it is. Sony is struggling to put PS3 back on track, but again the Japanese electronics maker doesn’t consider the price as a problem. Probably instead of a price cut, Sony will use the Leipzig event to announce some new games and maybe even new online services for Europe. The Leipzig Games Convention runs from August 20-22.

As expected, the latest NPD results show that Nintendo claimed the top two hardware spots with its DS and Wii respectively. Thus the Wii maker claimed a huge 49 percent share of the total number of consoles sold in July. Sony came in third, with the PlayStation 3 selling 224,900 units and the PlayStation Portable coming in fourth with 221,700 units.

As usual, each console maker has managed to interpret the NPD results in its own convenient way, finding an algorithm by which it comes out on top of its competitors. Thus, Microsoft has analyzed the data and has found out that consumers have spent more than $10.4 billion on the Xbox 360, presumably including hardware, software, online and accessories, which amounts to 49 percent of the market.
