After posting a note
on their website saying that iPhone users will get free access to AT&T
Wi-Fi hot spots, the phone company said that the moment is still to come and withdrew
the information from their site.
The announcement shattered the dreams of the
company’s subscribers that already hoped to access internet for free from the
over 17,000 locations where the service is available.
The announcement that
AT&T took off its website noted that "AT&T knows Wi-Fi is hot, and
free Wi-Fi even hotter, which is why we are proud to offer iPhone customers
free access to the nation's largest Wi-Fi hot-spot network with more than
17,000 hot spots, including Starbucks. Now users can relax and access music,
e-mail, and Web browsing services with their favorite blend in hand from the
comfort of their favorite location."
Hotter as AT&T
considers it to be, it was not willing to make the service available just yet.
The company did the same thing in May, when it announced a similar service for
its Laptop Connect subscribers, but latter said that the info appeared on their
website because of a mistake that some employees made.
However, all hope
isn’t lost for AT&T subscribers. Company officials said that AT&T plans
to release the two services simultaneously later this year.
What is interesting is
how a company the size and prestige of AT&T could make the same mistake
during a period of only few months. What remains to be seen is whether these
two mistakes will tarnish the company’s image a little bit or not, since the
events seem to show a lack of communication among the communication giant’s
departments.
