The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, i determined to attend at the summit of the Caspian Sea littoral states, despite the rumors of a possible assasination plot.
"Will I go to Iran or not? Of course I'm going to Iran," Putin told
reporters Monday in Wiesbaden, where he was meeting with German
Chancellor Angela Merkel.
"If I were always to listen to the safety recommendation of the
security services, I would always stay home. They must do their work,
while I must continue with mine," Putin said in Wiesbaden.
Iran had Sunday dismissed the latest claim of a plot as "totally
baseless" and a "psychological effort by enemies of Iran-Russian ties."
If Putin decides to postpone his visit, this would strain the ties between Russia and Iran. The Iranian authorities would be offended by Putin’s lack of trust, the rumors of to assassinate being denied by them.
"These reports are totally baseless and in line with psychological efforts by enemies of Iran-Russia ties,"Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini was quoted by state news agency IRNA as saying.
Putin also declared Monday that Iran's nuclear programme would be a
prime topic of discussion in negotiations with Iranian President
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad later Monday and Tuesday.
