It’s pretty hard for
any animated movie to bring crowds to the cinemas after an animation hit like
‘WALL-E’, but I think it’s only fair to say that ‘Space Chimps’ doesn’t
probably have any chance to become a block buster. And that’s not because the
movie is bad, or can’t entertain the audience, it’s just that it is a little
bit too old-school to get people out of their homes.
Add that to the fact
that the movie is rated G. Not many adults would like to see this kind of
movie, which is more likely to provide some entertainment to their kids, but
not to them. However, ‘Space Chimps’ is not to be underestimated, and if given
a chance, it would probably make many adults laugh a little bit together with
their children.
The story of the movie
is as follows. Humans have lost a space probe that they know that was suck into
a wormhole. Even though they need to take it back, it would be a far too
dangerous mission to send humans to get it back, so they decide that a chimp
mission would be more suitable.
This being said, they
decide to recruit Ham III, the grandson of Ham, the first chimp that was sent
into space in 1961. The problem is that Ham III is a circus chimp and is much
more into tricks than into space missions. He is teamed with the lovely Luna
and the stiff space commander chimp Titan.
Together they travel
to the planet where the probe crashed and discover a world where the alien
dictatorial leader Zartog is using the probe to control the planet’s
inhibitors. It is up to the chimps to save the alien planet and retrieve the
probe back to Earth.
