Nintendo’s Wii console keeps topping the sales charts, firmly
holding on to the number one spot in the consoles division for the past 10
months.
The company recorded sales of over 555,000 units in July,
bringing the grand total to about 11.5 million units sold worldwide.
Over the past few months, there have been several problems
with the company’s ability to keep up with the demand, as many stores reported
a shortage on their Wii stocks. Nintendo decided to increase the monthly
production on its systems from 1.8 million to 2.4 million.
The sales are also influenced by the games released, with
three of the company’s titles showing up on the top 10 games of the month list.
The most popular is Wii Fit, found at number 2, seconded by Wii Play at number
4 and Mario Kart managed to reach number 7.
The company feels that this is the best time to strengthen
its market position, and is preparing the set for the launch of a brand new
product called the Nintendo Wii Sqweeze. The release is scheduled for some time
in 2009, and very few details are available at this point.
The general trend for the industry is extremely positive,
recording total sales of $1.19 billion for this year, which represents an
increase of more than 35 percent from last year’s figures. "The results
reflect the continued strength of the industry and the appeal of a wide variety
of content," explained Anita Frazier, from the market tracking firm NPD
Group.
