Nintendo Wii breaks not only hearts, such as those of
Microsoft and Sony, but also records, by reaching the 500,000 units mark on the
Australian market. Nintendo Australia revealed that in just 84 weeks since
launch, Nintendo Wii became the fastest selling home console, beating the
previous record holders by 23 weeks.
Nintendo DS, which currently has a 1.2 million unit
installed base, continues to be very popular among Australian consumers,
reaching the highest number of consoles sold in a week, starting July 6 – over 49,000
units.
These sales were highly influenced by sales of Touch!
Generations games, such as “Brain Training,” “More Brain Training,” “Sight
Training,” “Maths Training,” “Cooking Guide,” “Can’t Decide What To Eat” and “nintendogs,”
Nintendo Australia revealed.
Upcoming releases for Wii include “Trauma Center: Second
Opinion,” which will become available as of August 28, and “Wario Land: The
Shake Dimension,” coming up on September 25. “Etrian Odyssey” for Nintendo DS will
be available on August 14, followed by “Make 10: A Journey of Numbers,”
arriving on September 4 and “Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir” arriving in October
on DS.
At the same time, the Interactive Entertainment Association
of Australia (IEAA) announced record sales of $1.57 billion in the video and
computer game industry over the last financial year, with 52.9 percent increase
on sales of games software, consoles, peripherals and PC games.
Furthermore, statistics compiled by the independent market
research group GfK Australia have shown a 55 percent increase in games software
sales compared to the previous year, and a 74 percent increase in games console
sales.
Australia is not the only market conquered by Nintendo this
year. According to NPD figures for the month of June, Nintendo was the winner
on the U.S. market, reaching 11,008,200 units sold and outrunning Microsoft’s
Xbox by over 500,000 units.
