Nintendo Wii continues its triumphant march in the next-gen
gaming consoles world for the forth month in a row. According to latest data
sales released by NPD Group, Nintendo Wii sold 360.000 units, despite its limited
supplies. The Wii was surpassed only by its relative, Nintendo DS which sold
471.000 units.
The Nintendo's rivals, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are
still far behind compared to the "little gaming console that could".ť
During April, Microsoft managed to sell 174.000 units of its
Xbox 360 gaming console. For Sony, April was the worst month in terms of PS3's
sales. The Japanese console maker has sol only 82.000 units. In fact, April is
the first month when PS3 sales drops below 100.000 units per month mark.
"The PlayStation 3 was
obviously a little bit flat during the month. We didn't have a lot of hardware
drivers out during the month, we didn't have any first-party titles," Sony
spokesman Dave Karraker explained.
PS3 was outsold even by PS2, which gained the number 3 spot
in NPD's statistics with 194.000 units. PSP is not doing so great either. Despite
the price cut announced by Sony for North America,
PSP sold 183.000 units.
In March, according to same NPD Group, Nintendo Wii was No.
1, selling 259,000 units. Microsoft's Xbox 360 came in second with sales of
199,000 units, while Sony managed to occupy third place with about half of
Wii's sales figure, 130,000 PlayStation 3 consoles sold.
In February 2007 NPD Group reported Wii was the top-selling
console video game system of the month, with an estimated 335,000 units sold,
while Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sold 228,000 units and PS3 sold 127,000 units.
As for software sales, Nintendo is again the King of Gaming.
Pokemon Diamond and Pearl (DS), which sold more copies than any other games
during the month, did 1.7 million total in little over a week. Super Paper
Mario (Wii), Wii Play (Wii) and Guitar Hero II (Xbox 360) made up the rest of
the top five.
"Nothing is more valuable in the entertainment world
than an evergreen franchise," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president and COO of
Nintendo of America. "These new Pokemon titles have cemented their place
longside the most enduring intellectual properties of the book, music and movie
industries. And that appeal will expand even further with the introduction of
Pokemon Battle Revolution to our Wii home console next month."
