According to a recent report, Nintendo’s Wii video-game
console managed to rise above the economic crisis, keeping its appeal to
consumers and doubling its sales in November.
“Nintendo, the world's largest maker of game consoles, sold
2.04 million Wii players last month,” reported the NPD Research Group.
Nintendo’s President Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed the figures
and said that the results represent a record for consoles in any other month
besides December, and added that last year’s 981,000 sold units, which
represent sales of less than a half over the same time period, should
strengthen his statement.
The company managed to come out with an excellent strategy
for branding and marketing its product, making it the market’s number one.
The competition also recorded a small boost, with Microsoft
Corp selling in November 836,000 units of its Xbox 360 video-game console. Last
year’s figures for November show sales of 770,000 units, which represent an
improvement of 8.6 percent for this year. The strategy introduced in September,
to lower the price of its Xbox 360 Arcade from $279.99 to $199.99, appears to
have paid off for the company, which expects the trend to also continue in
December.
The total sales recorded by the U.S. video-games industry were
of $2.91 billion for last month, which represents a 10 percent increase from
last year’s numbers. As mentioned above, the excellent sales recorded by
Nintendo’s Wii were mainly responsible for the increase, and the video game
industry appears to be less influenced by the economic crisis than other
segments.
