Gamasutra released a top presenting the best selling games of 2008 and surprisingly enough four of the top 5 games are exclusively for the Wii and are made by Nintendo.
The best selling game this is year is Super Smash Bros. Brawl which managed to sell 3.5 million units. Second place goes to Mario Kart Wii, third place to Grand Theft auto 4 for the Xbox and Wii Fit and Wii Play come last. It’s interesting to see that the Xbox title is alone in this top 5.
This shows once again how popular the Wii really is, but it also bring out another thing. Nintendo’s gaming console doesn’t have a third party title that sold really well on their device, meaning that game developers are not really interested in making the best out of Wii nonconformist hardware.
Nintendo seems to be as powerful as ever, but many wonder how much time will their classic franchises last and appeal to the public? Super Smash Bros. Brawl is an interesting title and it deserves the title of best selling game, but isn’t Nintendo also interested in bringing innovation to what their games rely on? Mario is fun. On the other hand, Mario has been everywhere, including outer space.
The Wii is the only gaming console the steps out of the crowd through hardware and this pays off for Nintendo. On the other hand, the lack of third-party titles for the Wii should make the people at Nintendo wonder if this isn’t, in fact, a disadvantage. All in all, it seems that this has been an excellent year for the Wii and for Nintendo, as the competition always struggled for second place, in terms of sales.
