Nintendo is working with Japan's largest advertising agency, Dentsu, in order to offer a video-distribution service on Nintendo's immensely popular Wii console. However, they have yet to decide on what type of programming they will create for the service, but original cartoons and other entertainment content are under consideration.
Of course, some of the fare will be available to all customers, being accompanied by ads, while other material will require customers to spend money. Dentsu and Nintendo will launch the new service in Japan next year, while the timing for overseas has yet to be set. Nintendo has sold 34.6 million Wii consoles as of the end of September, far outselling Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3. Nintendo Wii features a motion-sensing controller that looks like a TV remote and gives customers the feeling they're in the game, not playing the game.
Nintendo Wii has once again dominated the top sellers in video games and hardware. During the holiday shopping rush, not one mention was made of Sony's PlayStation 3 or Microsoft's Xbox 360. Even if it was expected that Sony and Microsoft would have a stronger showing during this year's holiday season, it really looks like they didn't.
In related news, it seems like online shoppers helped Amazon rake in its best holiday sales season in 14 years, with nearly 73 items ordered per second on December 15. Amazon called out the Wii specifically in terms of its holiday success, saying, as previously mentioned, that Nintendo Wii dominated the top sellers in video games and hardware including the Wii console, the Wii remote controller and the Wii nunchuk controller.
