United States company Hillcrest Labs filled Wednesday a patent infringement suit against Nintendo, claiming that the Japanese company used technology that was much too similar to the one developed by Hillcrest Labs in creating the popular Wiimote gaming control.
The US company manufactures a device that it calls “The Loop” which allows users to select and move items on screens by swinging it in a way similar to the Wii remote. Hillcrest Labs asked the authorities to ban the shipping of Wii consoles in the United States and to make Nintendo pay an unspecified amount of money to the company.
The Wii remote has been the main feature that made Nintendo's Wii the best selling console of its generation in the United States. Its low price as well as the innovative games that have been created for it attracted lots of persons. The Wiimote allows gamers to control the character of a game by simply swinging it.
According to Reuters, Hillcrest Labs said Wednesday in a statement that “While Hillcrest Labs has a great deal of respect for Nintendo and the Wii, Hillcrest Labs believes that Nintendo is in clear violation of its patents and has taken this action to protect its intellectual property rights.”
Nintendo lost another patent infringement suit earlier this year. A court considered that the company infringed the patents of the Texas-based company Anascape in creating three of its controllers. The Japanese company has to pay $21 million, but has already appealed the decision.
If Nintendo will be found guilty this time, there is no telling whether other companies that make controllers similar to the Wiimote will be sued as well.
