With the holiday season coming up, and a Nintendo Conference
held against time in Japan (we already knew what North American president of
Nintendo, Reggie Fils-Aime had to say before he even opened his mouth), it
looks that the Wii stocks are replenishing and retailers will be better
prepared for this end of the year’s shopping assault.
The signals given by Nintendo for this end of the year look
promising for the Japanese market in particular, since consumers here will be
the first to get their hands on the new Nintendo DSi in one month’s time. North
American enthusiasts will have to wait a bit longer, “well into” 2009, and no,
Santa will not leave any DSi on the shelves of the North American retailers!
So while we’re working on our shopping list for the next
months, we’ll need to wait for this end of the year’s attraction in Japan, the
Nintendo DSi, to go overseas. And while Nintendo was scarce on details on what
that “well into 2009” date might be, we can only hope it’s as soon as possible.
There is a very good explanation for that, and Reggie was
kind enough to share with the world and the eager US consumers: the demand for
the existing Nintendo DS hardware is strong enough that the DSi will be put on
hold for now. Furthermore, he also added that there will be plenty of DSs and
Wiis for the next three months to satisfy all customer demands, and perhaps
break some new records.
So what’s in for the Q4 shopping spree? Nintendo already
announced enough DSs and Wiis to keep up with the demand, and even if there won’t
be any DSi for US, there will be a lot of new things, including new game
releases, a chat feature for Wii and the expansion of Club Nintendo to North
America.
This holiday Wii season will include “Wii Music,” which is
scheduled to launch on October 20, for all music fans out there, “Animal
Crossing: City Folk,” which launches on November 16, “Tetris Party,” with 18
game modes and 10 never-before-seen single-player and multiplayer variations of
the game, “Strong Bad Episode 3,” “World of Goo,” “Cave Story,” “Boingz.”
Also on Wii, but in 2009, Nintendo announced the availability of “Sin &
Punishment 2,” the highly anticipated “Punch-Out!” franchise, for an ultimate
boxing experience against Glass Joe, King Hippo and many others.
The DS holiday season will debut with “Personal Trainer:
Cooking” which launches on November 24 and comes with over 200 recipes from all
over the world, and “Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia,” which launches on
November 10. The DS title list for 2009 includes “Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon,” “Mario
& Luigi RPG 3,” and “Rhythm Heaven.”
“We have new games and new experiences for every kind of
player this holiday season, and that will certainly fuel increased interest in
Wii and Nintendo DS,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo America’s executive vice president
of Sales & Marketing. “While there’s no way to gauge total demand for our
hardware systems, we’re trying to satisfy as many of those players as possible.”
