Nintendo DS Tops The Sales Charts!

The Nintendo DS’ success on the market has been extraordinary, according to the research done by Game Informer and presented by industry Web site Gamasutra. The game has secured its number one market position and shows no sign of letting go.

The DS managed to beat the PSP not only when it comes to hardware, but also in number of games sold per system. At this point, the DS has 653 titles released and they sell an average of 163,000 units per game. In comparison, the PSP has 396 titles and the average is of 133,000 units sold per release. This means, that the average DS owner has purchased 4.8 games and the PSP owner 4.2 games.

Nintendo’s Wii is also doing extremely well, with the console clearing the 7 million bar earlier this week in the Japanese market. Since its launch on December 2, 2006, the device and its games have recorded huge popularity all over the world, and have started a trend when it comes to this type of games.

The competition’s figures appear quite small by comparison, with PlayStation 3’s sales in Japan around 2.5 million units and the Xbox 360 just over 800,000 units.

The thing that made it so popular, besides its innovative motion-sensing controllers, is the fact that the company addressed the casual gamers and refused to copy its competition, Sony and Microsoft, that focused mainly on core gamers. The game console, which lacked the high-definition features, appealed to users who were simply looking for a good time, not concerned about graphics and similar issues.
