Nine Injured as Church Bus Crashes in Southern Carolina

A church bus with about a dozen children on board ran off a highway and overturned in Southern Carolina. The bus crashed into a tree as it ran off the road and the impact led to the injuring of nine people, officials said Thursday.

The accident took place Wednesday night on a rural highway in Pickens County, located in the northwest part of the state, Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Scot Edgeworth said.

"We were riding down the road and I felt a little bump and all of a sudden, the lights went out and we started rolling and the windows started busting," 10-year-old Austin Moore told WYFF-TV. "Everybody started screaming and flying around bus."

There was a heavy fog in the area, but it is still unknown whether this was the main cause of the crash or just one of the elements leading to it.

Those injured in the bus crash were rushed to the Greenville Memorial Hospital. One child was in critical condition, and another one was listed as serious in the hospital. Except them, the other had suffered light injuries and had been released, spokeswoman Karen Gecewich said.

One of the injured teens went into cardiac arrest, said Don Evett, head of Pickens County Emergency Management and EMS.

According to Evett, the church bus could hold about 30 passengers. "It was pretty much destroyed," he said of the vehicle. The vehicle was heading home after the children were taken to a service at Lakeview Baptist Church.
