Pregnant socialite Nicole Richie spent a whopping 82 minutes behind bars Thursday, thus making amends for her long-discussed DUI charges.

Many celebrities seem to be headed for jail these days but few stick around for long. Nicole Richie has broken the record though as least-time-behind-the-bars: 82 minutes.

She had originally been sentenced to four days in jail, to be completed by September 28. Los Angeles County Superior Court Commissioner Steve Lubell also placed Nicole under three years of probation and ordered her to complete an alcohol education program. She was fined a couple of thousand dollars.

Her 96 hours of imprisonment were reduced to a nice 82 minutes. Nicole presented herself Thursday at the Twin Towers Correction Facility, in Lynwood, California, the same facility where BFF Paris Hilton paid for her own illegalities.

With her were fiancé and father of her yet-to-be-born child Joel Madden and her lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holly.

According to authorities, Nicole was released within an hour and a half of lockup according to current laws. The sheriff’s department released a statement explaining that under federal court mandate to manage jail overcrowding, detainees sentenced to 30 days or less for a nonviolent offense are usually released within 12 hours.

“Miss Richie was cooperative,” an L.A. County sheriff's official said. “Based on her sentence and Federal Court guidelines, Miss Richie was released at 4:37 p.m.” (she entered the facility at 3:15 p.m.).

Under the guidelines, Nicole was “treated in the same manner as other inmates with a similar sentence,” the statement added.

In December 2006, Nicole,25, was arrested for driving under the influence. She told police officers at the time she had smoked marijuana and taken the painkiller Vicodin. She was pulled over for driving the wrong way on a freeway in Burbank.

She had been convicted for drunken driving in 2003.

Nicole Richie, daughter of singer Lionel Richie and star of the reality television series “The Simple Life,” announced she was pregnant with Joel Madden, lead singer of Good Charlotte, earlier this summer.

The two are reportedly engaged.
