Actress Nicole Kidman bares her soul in the October edition of Vanity Fair, talking about marriage, children and love.
Nicole Kidman, 40, formerly married to Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise, currently married to country music star Keith Urban, reveals herself as a woman yearning for marriage and family in Vanity Fair magazine's October issue, on newsstands Sept. 11.
The actress, who is the mother of two children adopted during her marriage to Cruise, Isabella, 14, and Connor, 12, reveals she always wanted babies.
“From the minute Tom and I were married, I wanted to have babies,” the Australian actress says. “And we lost a baby early on, so that was really very traumatic. And that's when it came that we would adopt Bella.”
Nicole and Tom Cruise married on Christmas Eve in 1990, adopted Bella two years later and Connor in 1995. The couple divorced after 10 years of marriage. Tom subsequently married Katie Holmes, with whom he has daughter Suri.
Nicole told VF that she was never confused about her priorities. Referring to her first marriage, she says, “My agents told me, ‘Once you become Mrs. Tom Cruise, you do know your career is going to die.
“I was appalled,” she says. “I was like, ‘Hello? I'm in love, and I don't care if it's shooting myself in the foot. I'd much rather be married and have a family.’”
The actress won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in 2002’s “The Hours” and has been praised as one of the best actresses of her generation. She confesses though that professional success is not gratifying in itself if there isn’t someone to share it with.
“You're in a hotel and you're like, ‘Okay, well, I'm sitting in this big suite with an Oscar and I still don’t have a life - what is wrong with me? Who do I jump on the bed with and celebrate with and order pancakes with?’ That was painful, not having that person to share it with.”
Before sharing pancakes with hubby Keith Urban, Nicole says she was engaged to someone else, whose name she refused to reveal. “I got engaged to somebody, but it just wasn't right. I wasn't ready. We weren't ready.”
Of her marriage to Keith, which was off to a rocky start when the singer had a relapse and entered a rehabilitation facility, Nicole says, “We were a mixture of frightened and brave. We were in a very, very, very bad, painful place and have managed to step through it.”
Nicole and Keith married in June 2006, in Sydney, Australia.
As for the future, Nicole still has babies on her mind. “I'm yearning to have one. I think I would be very sad if I wasn't able to have a baby. Keith knows I want one, and he has been getting there slowly.”
